Re-designing the construction sector: Sustainable and functional bio-based construction products and building elements

The BIOS MATER project, funded by CBE JU, focuses on developing and testing innovative bio-based construction products and building elements that are sustainable, safe, and high-performing.

The project is organized into four production routes, each targeting a specific application:

  • Route A: Bio-based core products and sandwich structures for flooring
  • Route B: Bio-based wall panels and flooring tiles
  • Route C: Façade panels made from natural fiber-reinforced composites
  • Route D: Biodegradable, plantable tiles from bio-based foams for drywall panels

The BIOS MATER approach is built on four main pillars: (1) innovation in bio-based building materials, (2) integration and expansion of the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, (3) circular economy integration and scalability, and (4) market adoption driven by transparency and stakeholder engagement.

A key feature of the project is the DEMOpark, a real-world testing site where the developed building components will be evaluated under practical construction conditions.

DReVen plays a leading role in the sustainability activities of BIOS MATER. Our responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that assess technical, environmental, economic, and social performance
  • Conducting an integrated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the full life cycle impacts of the developed solutions across environmental, economic, and social dimensions
  • Leading the implementation of the SSbD framework, ensuring that safety and sustainability are embedded from the earliest stages of product design
